The 5 Styles I Carried over from Winter to Spring

I always have mixed feelings about moving from winter to spring/summer - don’t get me wrong, I love having a little colour and a patio but I definitely gravitate towards more of a fall/winter wardrobe. I’m the queen of jackets and would prefer to pair every outfit with a long duster, blazer or overcoat. Alas, spring has sprung, I’m buying tulips on the reg and it’s time for me to switch over some winter to spring wardrobe choices. However, these days I’m all about the investment pieces, less shopping, and more transferable pieces that you can wear year round. Gone are the days of finding a weekend shirt at Forever 21 for that house party you were going to that would inevitably fall apart on the 3rd wash.

After an inventory of my closet while recently packing a trip to Palm Springs, I realized I could rework most of my favourites into a spring pairing updated look - I’ve compiled a list of my 5 looks I’ll be wearing all spring.

Headbands

Blair Waldorf was my favourite character on Gossip Girl for many reasons but one of the most important was the girl could rock the headband. Let go of the stigma that headbands are reserved for girls age 5 and under. I find it a great way to update a low pony, keep your hair off your face or be a pop of colour. I’d say it’s an on trend piece but with super cute ones costing less than $20 it’s one you could get on board with. A few ones I like are here.

Backless

The back! The understated body part that can amp up the sex appeal of an outfit or just simply add some interest to a shirt. There are a ton of backless bodysuits that are available right now too which helps keep things in place (no one likes adjusting all night). Don’t be afraid of colour or texture (like my lace one). Invest in the right bra through - I usually opt for strapless so I don’t have to be fussing to keep the straps hidden. And if you’re one of those people that can go bra-less, well, all the power to you - I’m very jealous.

Black Nails

For probably 3 years, I’ve had nude nails - well, every shade of nude, light pink, peach etc that you can pick.. However, I recently went with BLACK nails, inspired by one of my favourite bloggers, The August Diaries, and have to say I may never go back (well, maybe neon for summer). I think black sometimes puts people off because it seems harsh, masculine and intense but I felt the opposite. It gave me a weird confidence and I was proud to talk with my hands; not to mention it complimented my almost all black wardrobe. This colour is not reserved just for winter, it would look awesome with a little tan and a lime marg in hand on a patio.

Olive Green

A great neutral that can be dressed up or down. I have two long olive green coats and recently picked up this button up from J.Crew on the sale rack. It pairs great with jeans, a leather pencil skirt or any neutral colour. It’s really versatile on most skin tones and picks up well in photos. This colour has been around and I predict will continue to be around whether it’s purses, totes, camo or coats. Don’t be afraid to invest in this piece - it’s not going anywhere. I’m obsessed with this trench from Club Monaco I bought during their winter sale!

Pencil Skirts

Rachel Zane, Donna Paulsen, Joan Holloway - all women that can rock a pencil skirt like no one else. I’ll tell you - if I were a super hero, my uniform would probably be a pencil skirt. Any time I need to fake some confidence I will wear this outfit. It empowers me to embrace my womanly shape, walk tall and own the day. I’ve done away with my black tights for winter but easily updated this look with some skin, pumps (obviously) and a classic white tee. Hoops and a pop of colour on the lip and you’re good!

Ok so there is your winter > spring > summer game plan. I’m having fun thinking of some new ways to wear my wardrobe and in the midst of everyone’s effort to Marie Kondo their life, I encourage you to try to mix up your pieces - never under estimate the shopping in your own closet! I am on the hunt for a good one shoulder number though…

A London To Do List: After you've done the tourist stuff.

When I think about London, this quote by Samuel Johnson pops into my head:

“…when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

I couldn’t agree more. Another London local, Paddington Bear also says: “In London, everyone is different, and that means anyone can fit in.” Which is another favourite quality I feel about this city - just look around the tube and you’ll see all walks of life from the suit, backpacker, student or dame.

I’ve had the privilege of visiting London a few times and even had a working visa there in 2014, which allowed me to really immerse myself in the city and get a sense of life as a local. It’d been 5 years since I was there and I  couldn’t wait to get back to a city that feels like another home, embrace a no-plan plan and not be obligated to do all the tourist stuff (been there, done that). I mean, if Liz asked me to pop by for tea, I definitely would.

I know it’s cliche of all of my city guides but I have to start with the food. It’s one of my favourite things to check out in a new place and London has no shortage of restaurants to choose from. I also think that because London is a melting pot of all ethnicity the cuisine is a smorgasbord of different cultures and is always changing. I’ve also come to the conclusion that while in some cities to be a successful restaurant means you have one location tallied with reservations and line ups, in London, if you’re able to open a second or third or SEVENTH location, that means you’ve really made it.

The Food

Dishoom: Reading how Dishoom came to be in 7 locations, it was interesting to understand that it started with the idea of honouring the concept of Irani Cafes of Bombay. In the 1960s there were over 400 and less than 30 remain today. With a focus of bringing people together over food and drink regardless of their background is evident from its warm environment, delicious food meant to be shared and sampled, and authenticity. I’ll definitely need to go back to try more dishes but some favourites that stood out were: Black Daal, Chicken Tikka and Okra Fries.

Andina: Pervuian heaven! Another gem found in the Shoreditch hood that offered up an intimate space good for groups or sitting at the kitchen bar. You definitely need to try the signature pisco sour as well as the ceviche which I’d say it’s most known for. Other must orders were the chicken wings and corn bread. Expect a line up if you’re choosing to walk in, we waited about 45 minutes at 9pm, but worth it! You can grab a dirty martini at the Ace Hotel lobby bar while you wait.

Granger: When I lived in London I actually lived across the street from the Granger in Notting Hill and it was ALWAYS lined up. Didn’t matter if it was Tuesday at 2pm or peak Sunday brunch hour. I was curious to see if the hype had stood the test of time 5 years later and it did. Still lined up almost a block long for Saturday brunch, but the service is excellent and the Nottinghill people watching is enough to pass the time. The burger is epic and a must order, and their brunch has a great menu satisfying the lovers of porridge (me!) to a more traditional English breaky. GO HERE.

Blanchette: With locations found in Shoreditch and Soho, it makes for a perfect spot to indulge in fine French cuisine for brunch, a boozy lunch or before the theatre. When you walk in you’re immediately taken to a French countryside bistro of exposed brick, cozy booths, decades of random knick knacks on the walls and a dripping candle or two. The happy hour offered a great selection of french cheese (obviously) and the service was fantastic - she basically just told us what to order and recommended the monk fish which was a nice light contrast to all the meat and cheese. Adorable spot - will be coming back for brunch for sure!

The Bell & Crown: I’m not sure you can even say you’ve experienced London unless you’ve been to Sunday Roast…in my mind it’s an every Sunday sort of thing that you gather at your local pub (where everybody actually knows your name {insert Cheers line here}) and you be merry and boozy all afternoon. To contrary belief, I have it on accord from the Canadian locals living in London that it’s more of an occasional thing, catch up with old mates or show a visitor how yorkshire pudding is really made. This particular location was a bit of a haul outside the city (but was an invite from true Londoners so happy to make the trek!) - it was SO cute and had river front views. Perfect way to fill an afternoon and be in bed by 8pm.

Sketch: Oh man, anyone who played tea party growing up would fall in love with this place - even if you didn’t, the pink room sucks you in with its violins in the corner, petit fours, a caviar man in a top hat and a bathroom that is likely used more for photo ops than function. I’d heard of this place from a few bloggers I follow and knew I needed to experience this first hand. So naturally, I put on my best beret and had tea with my bestie. It doesn’t get more British than that! Granted it’s a bit of an indulgence, I’d say that the amount of food you got was worth it, not to mention the service and ambiance. Go for it, have your tea and drink it too. They also offer different rooms for dinner and drinks that look nothing short of a page out of Alice in Wonderland. I’d recommend making a reservation though as it’s quite busy!

The Hoods

Shoreditch: Our Air BnB was in the heart of Shoreditch just a block down from the Ace Hotel. My friend actually worked at the Ace Hotel so we already had a baseline that this was an area we wanted to be in. I’d definitely recommend checking out the hotel if even for a coffee or drink in the lobby bar. To keep with all Ace Hotel themes, you’ll find an impressive collection of records and a photo booth to bring you back to your pre-teen days at the mall. The area is also crawling with the best vintage shopping around and the art of Banksy down random alleys and buildings. You could explore this neighbourhood on foot and find any vintage band shirt you’d want, an avacado smoothie or a spin class; something for everyone. It’s also a 10 minute walk to Liverpool street station and kind of follows the rule of 20 minutes to almost any neighbourhood you need to go to.

Notting Hill: I mean I won’t beat a dead horse on this one but it’s just so classic London to me. The architecture, the market, the colours, the fashion. It fills my cup of tea (see what I did there?). Not much had changed since we lived there and we actually were there on a Saturday to see Portobello Road in its prime form.

Hyde Park: I used to run in Hyde Park every day when I lived near there, I’m not even much of a runner but there was something that actually made me enjoy the exercise. The huge pathways made way for bikes, scooters, runners, families, random saxophone players and wildlife. With London being a metropolis of vast grand buildings, there’s something to be said about 350 acres of land in the heart of the city for people to enjoy. Take a book, bring a picnic, feed the ducks or take a paddle in the pond. One of my favourite places.

Kings Cross: This was one area that had really changed since I was last there. I mean, it still is home to the 9 and 3/4 platform to take you to Hogwarts, but its now gained a shopping area called Coal Drops Yard. It’s a perfect mix of food, coffee and shops in a spacious area that even has teeter totters in the middle! It was fun to wander through and be introduced to independent local shops like Bonds (another recommendation from a local!). The store made me almost want to purchase a checked bag to take home all the things but settled on the Earl of East candles that smell unbelievable.

The Shopping, The Culture and In Between

V&A Mueseum: I learnt there was a  Christian Dior exhibit on and was so excited to check it out but it was sold out. Sigh, will be back. Goes to show the no-plan plan doesn’t always work. We still checked out a Fashion exhibition that showcased the evolution from the 1800s. There were A LOT of corsets but still interesting to see how the classic pieces remain relevant and current today.

The National Portrait Gallery: My favourite! I’m sure for many. What can I say - I love a good story and every face paints its own. You will find everything from the Dames, Sirs, Jagger and Winehouse. A great pit stop before you catch a show or comedy act in the theatre district.

So now that you know where to eat, drink, and get some culture - there is the question of nightlife (after all the eating). I’m not cool enough to know the night scene, so we were grateful enough to be hanging with locals who suggested a place called ‘The Piano Works’. I knew this was the place for me when I heard Prince being tickled on the ivories.  The venue is all live music where the song choice is completely decided by its audience. So naturally you could have a mix of random garbage or everything from Spice Girls, Bowie, Tom Jones and Kendrick Lamar. Expect a line up if you don’t have a guest list, but I promise you won’t be disappointed.

How I Found my Start Up Style

In honour of Vancouver recently hosting start up week, it got me thinking about my career in the start up world over the last 2.5 years with Procurify. That led me to begin thinking about how I’ve evolved, not only with my experience and skill set, but truly understanding what it’s like to be invested so whole heartedly into a company’s future and having a hand in help building it.

A common theme among the start up world is that “the people make the company” - and I’m going to jump on the bandwagon and completely agree. I think the most unique thing about the community is that people can come from all different backgrounds and contribute in individual, imaginative and collaborative ways.

When I first started in the start up world, I wasn’t sure or confident how I’d fit in. If you’ve read any of my other posts, I’m constantly talking about how I’m an old soul; you won’t be surprised that I’ve coined the nickname ‘Mama’ since almost day 1 at Procurify. My team promises it’s not because they think I’m ancient - it could be just my maternal instincts or occasional baking? Regardless, my past jobs were far from the open concept, Silicon Valley sitcom, dog friendly office setting and this was completely new to me.

I’ve always felt more comfortable and confident in work attire: as the Elizabeth Taylor quote goes, “Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together”. Ok, I’m not having a scotch with breakfast or anything, but when I put on my uniform of a pencil skirt, pumps or blazer, it gives me the boost I need to tackle the day, lead the meeting or deal with the angry customer. I was worried I’d have to forgo that uniform in the start up, casual-trendy world and that made me a bit nervous.

However, what I quickly learned is that the beauty of no dress code allowed every person to express themselves in their own individual way on any particular day. Some adopted a “full tuck Friday” look, some prefer to opt for athlesiure and slippers and some in 5 inch heels. The beauty of this is that not only is your own style encouraged, but it’s accepted and embraced without judgement and usually with a compliment down the hall.

The thing I love about fashion is that it is an expression or extension of that person, and it doesn’t have to be a commitment to a particular style but can evolve with age, surroundings, your city and most importantly what makes you feel your very best on that day. While I may opt for a more professional look on most days, I have embraced mixing up my style with denim, baseball hats and leopard in the office, which hopefully makes my team think of me like a hip, cool mom?

I’ll leave you with a quote I just read, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”

Words to Live By

I've realized that I have a playbook of words and phrases that I'm constantly referencing in my day to day. Whether it's new people or my childhood friends, it's often quickly pointed out to me that I'm a rolodex of quotes from movies, music or people. Full disclosure: I know a lot of pointless information that maybe only Jerry Seinfeld would appreciate. 

Regardless if you have an elephant memory like me, I think people resonate with different words in life and like to have reminders of these sayings that have meaning to them. Whether it's a sticky note on your computer or words on a t-shirt, it's becoming more prominent to display these quotes or quibs in different forms as an extension of who you are and what you stand for.  

I've always been a big fan of Conan O'Brien's "If you work really hard and are kind, amazing things will happen". I was inspired by an Instagram photo I'd come across and decided this mantra I so firmly believed in needed to be framed in my home. I couldn't be happier with the result: I found this print on Etsy (find it  here) for $30 and framed it at Michael's. Cheers to affordable art!

My dad is a big fan of classic rock and while we wouldn't admit it during our teen years, he gave us the best music education growing up. Let's just say while my classmates were singing 'Barbie World' during our talent show my twin brother and I performed 'Heart of Gold' by Neil Young. I love that music can be such a reminder about a time in your life or person; a certain lyric or melody can bring back a flood of memories.

Again, following my affordable art trend in my home, I framed some album covers that remind me of my childhood. Look to your favourite artist and you're guaranteed to find some album cover gems. During my recent trip to Portland there was a Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic'  album featuring classics like "Nuthin' but a G Thing" and "Dre Day" - if you haven't heard these on vinyl, you haven't lived.  Hit up your local record store, see what you can find, and then frame your choice album with this (on sale now!) There is no Dre on my wall but The Beatles, Dylan, Young and Mellencamp represent my old soul well.

Unlike my taste in music, my taste in jewelry is something that has evolved through my twenties: I used to often find myself stalking up on costume pieces from the local H&M or department store bi-weekly. Like your taste in clothes, your jewellery style changes as well. Today, I find myself wearing the same pieces over and over, day or night. I would rather have fewer more beautiful pieces than a plethora of junk.

This necklace from Sweet Harriet Designs is my latest piece and I'm so happy with it! "Let's get carried away": I was immediately drawn to this saying because of my love of travel and new places. My bucket list still lists for me to walk into an airport and ask for a ticket on the next plane out of here. When I'm wearing this necklace it acts as a reminder to not take life so seriously, go with the flow more and perhaps worry a bit less. Styled for coffee or after work drinks - this will be my go to necklace this spring. 

Words are the ultimate creative outlet and I think it's great to showcase a string of them that you live by, in whichever way you want.

Accessorizing for Autumn

Oh, Autumn. What a beautiful time of year: the leaves are changing, the air is crisp and the colours of the season can't be beat. Depending on which city you live in, this season can be short lived and the prequel to the looming winter months that may mean endless snow shovelling and below zero temperatures. In Vancouver, September and October are some of my favourite months and can almost feel like an extended summer. Autumn also kind of reminds me of that awkward stage when you're growing your hair out from short to long and you don't really know what to do with it. Same goes for this season: you can't wear your winter wools but t-shirts aren't warm enough. You want to wear flats but it's a bit too cold and you can't be bothered to pull out the knee high boots just yet. As I mentioned from my summer style post, accessorizing for the season is a great way to stay on trend, transition pieces in your wardrobe from season to season (white after labour day IS ok, everyone!), and not necessarily break the bank. See what looks I'm falling for... (see what I did there?):

• Chokers: They stayed around! This trend has been consistent since spring and it seems to be gaining only more momentum and people are getting more creative with these necklaces. I'm not saying that I will go full bling but I am enjoying experimenting with different lengths and tying looks. I found this one at The Latest Scoop.

• The Cape: This article of clothing is probably the one I get the most flack for, and it's not new flack. It dates back to high school when I rocked a knitted poncho look while everyone else was wearing sweat pants to school. Maybe I was just ahead of my time? I am an old soul after all. The cape is a great layering piece and an easy alternative to a trench or raincoat for a brisk fall day. Since a cape is a lot of fabric, I'd suggest pairing with more fitted pieces for the most flattering look. I paired it with jeans and a t-shirt, it worked well for my afternoon of leaf tossing. • The Bold Lip: The lip is such a game changer in the world of make up. Recently I was heading out for the evening and had no time to put any effort into my makeup but I opted for this dark plum lip shade. It's the easiest way to update a look from day to night and really makes your lips the statement. No need to go heavy on the rest of the face, either! I love easy makeup routines. I'd definitely suggest a lip liner first and to colour in the lip. It helps the lipstick not bleed and it will stay on longer. I saw this great youtube video as well. This lipstick is one of of my favourites and it's from Ana V Beauty!

• Hats: Some will be surprised to hear that as much as I love to dress up I LOVE to wear baseball hats just as much. You never know which version of me will be showing up to dinner. My parents bought me this hat for my birthday and I'm happily expanding my baseball hat collection to this wide brimmed hat. I've tried the floppy hat before but I find myself just jerking my neck around trying to see all day - in a not-so-graceful manner. This hat stays out of my eyes and can be a life saver on a bad hair day. Another find from Nordstrom, here. 

• Mixing Patterns: Every time I invest in a new article of clothing I try to think of at least 5 things I can wear it with and how it can transition from season to season - this helps in justifying purchases (especially those with a hefty price tag). I'm so happy that the "no white after labour day" rule is long gone (exhibit A below). I think white is such a crisp colour that can be a perfect way to update an outfit and a fresh change from the black, gray, navy, brown neutral. This skirt paired well with this buffalo plaid print and complemented the black panelling on the skirt. I'm a big fan of mixing prints; some tips to keep in mind when pairing pieces are:
  • Pair pieces in the same colour family
  • Play around with scales of prints (think large and small polka dots)
  • Mix the SAME prints (example: floral on floral)
  • When in doubt, neutrals are always the perfect pair

So these are some of my favourite fall looks this year (also! you can't forget the blanket scarf that makes for the ideal array of clothing while watching the rain or snow fall down outside...) I hope I've inspired you to shop your closet and re-evaluate that summer wardrobe before you forget it. But also don't shy away from jumping on a new trend or lip shade.

My Summer-ish Style!

Everyone has a favourite season to dress for: whether you love being cozy in scarves and boots during fall and winter or in maxi dresses and flip flops in summer, we all have our fashion niche. However, it's always good to change up the wardrobe staples with each season. I love to "shop" in my closet and find new ways to wear old pieces or simply remember clothes I forgot about months ago - they're like new again! Summer unfortunately has been hit or miss in Vancouver, which is very disappointing after a really hot spring but, c'est la vie! Weather is for elevator small talk (or dates). 

Seasonal trends are not for everyone nor do you have to go completely outside of your style to keep up with what the kids are doing. Stick to what you're comfortable in (to an extent) but don't be afraid to go bold with a fashion trend, who knew the 90's would come back with the grunge look and chokers?? I like to think of these pieces as an extension of your wardrobe: a statement look or piece that may only be around for the season. Sometimes these "trendy" pieces come with a hefty price tag and you need to evaluate if it's really worth it. I think we can ask all the people that bought the cherry printed Louis Vuitton luggage if they still feel like that was a sound judgement call or if they should have stuck to the classic. So my advice is spend the money on the pieces that will be able to wear into different seasons (think a great ankle boot with a summer dress and also jeans in the fall, love these ones!) and be more practical with the on trend purchases! 

My summer style picks that will be on repeat this year... 

• Stan Smiths: I usually go for the white Chucks in the summer but I decided to splurge on my first pair of Adidas Stan Smiths and I LOVE them! These are so comfortable and the ultimate classic all white shoe. A versatile piece that goes with everything from dresses to jeans to a cigarette dress pant. I will admit I was inspired by Victoria Beckham on this look... I think her husband has some deal with Adidas too...

• The Bucket Bag: I love clutches but summers are best suited for hands to be free so cross body bags are the way to go (plus, they're perfect for bike rides and wine tours!) I found my bucket bag in the Nordstrom sales bin - a new brand for me but really happy with it! I love the tassle details. This is another one I like and this one. The slip on mules were only $5 at Old Navy and ripped jeans will never be a trend, but always a true love in my books.  

• The Choker: I was too young to adopt this trend in the 90's but I always appreciated Cher and Dionne's choker style in Clueless. You're seeing these more and more this year and I must say - I kind of like them! I went thrifty on mine and picked this one up for $15 - we'll see if this trend extends past the summer before I spend my dollars on this look! 

• The Strappy Sandal: Summer time means trading in the pumps and boots to show off a fresh pedicure. I love this sandal because you can wear it with everything; I love to wear them with jeans to dress up a casual look too. One day I'll splurge on a Stuart Weitzman pair but these Steve Maddens are a great price point and you can wear them all night because of the 3" heel. I want them in every colour.

• The Fanny Pack: I originally bought this for my day-of duties at weddings: I hate carrying around a purse when I'm 'working' but always needs to be carrying supplies (tide to go, sewing kit, flask, cell phone etc). But I'm realizing that fanny packs are so handy! Let's not go so far as my dad's neon/velcro version circa 1991, but Hershel has designed a really cute one - they actually call them 'hip packs'. It's my wedding accessory of the summer. 

• Off the Shoulder EVERYTHING: I'm seeing this trend everywhere, the shoulder is the hottest body part this summer! From flowy tops, cute dresses and fitted crop tops. I feel like it's a flattering cut for most figures and you don't feel overexposed. I will say that sometimes it's annoying to keep adjusting some styles but I saw this amazing youtube trick! My story telling usually entails lots of arms gestures so this youtube trick really saved me! This blue dress was another Old Navy steal for $15!

A Work Week with LC

I love to people watch or people stare as some might accuse. What can I say? I'm a curious one! When I travel I always like to get a sense of the vibe of the city, namely: what is everyone wearing? 

When I was in London I worked in the financial district and, without a doubt, I saw the best dressed men I've ever seen. Like David Beckham good (well, come on, not quite that good.) The tube would be jam packed and 30+ degrees, but the men would be standing there cool as can be in their perfectly pressed Hermes suits, cuff links, pocket square, and even their socks coordinated without breaking a sweat. That was the norm. The women, on the other hand, had a bit more of an eccentric style that often included jelly sandals so, needless to say, there was some disconnect in London's fashion, but overall, a very well dressed city. I've always been impressed with NYC attire as well, partially because you can truly wear anything and no one will be phased (j'adore Carrie). And in a city that WALKS everywhere, woman even Sex and the City it up strutting the streets in 5 inch heels! I mean if you're going to spend the money you might as well wear them!

I think many Vancouverites will agree that our city has a very laid back look for a bustling metropolis. You're not going to find any Harvey Spectors wandering the streets in three piece suits (sadly), nor are the woman in power suits. That doesn't mean there aren't powerhouse business people walking the streets - it just means that the guy in converse and plaid standing beside you at the food truck might be the CEO of the latest start up. So another life lesson I always follow, be KIND to EVERYONE. You never know if they'll end up being your boss.

Even with our relaxed feel, I prefer dressing up for work compared to my day to day wardrobe. It gives me a type of confidence that I wouldn't normally get in jeans and sneakers. I'm short, and I've always had jobs where I work with a lot of men; heels help to make me feel metaphorically and physically on their same level. Besides dressing for the job, I like to add my own style and definitely not stick to the typical boring work attire. Most things are fair game, leopard, lace, suede - in moderation, of course.

Check out my wardrobe from this past week! Spring is settling in so my black tights will go into hibernation again soon.

My final advice on the work day wardrobe is wear what you feel BEST in, you're going to be your best self if you do.

And like my slogan says, you can never be overdressed.
